EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, created by the renowned artist Shunsho, showcases a scene from the Kabuki play "Hikitsurete Yagoe Taiheiki" (The War Tale Taiheiki: With Din and Clamor of Battle), performed at the Morita Theater in the eleventh month of 1776 in Japan. The print features two prominent actors of the Katsukawa School, Nakamura Nakazo I and Kamogawa Noshio I, in their roles as Hata Rokurozaemon (disguised as the samurai's manservant, Yakko) and the Lady-in-Waiting Koto no Naishi, respectively. Hata Rokurozaemon, portrayed by Nakamura Nakazo I, is seen on the left side of the print, dressed in the beige and brown apparel of a manservant. He holds a katana sword in one hand and a fan in the other, while his expression suggests a mischievous and playful demeanor. The actor's mastery of the art of disguise is evident in this portrayal of a male character in a female role, a common practice in Kabuki theatre known as onnagata. On the right side of the print, Kamogawa Noshio I portrays the elegant and refined Lady-in-Waiting Koto no Naishi. She is dressed in a beautiful kimono with vibrant autumnal colors, adorned with intricate patterns and designs. The artist, Shunsho, expertly captures the grace and poise of the actress in this stunning representation of the character. This print is a testament to the rich artistic traditions of Japan during the Edo period and the enduring influence of Kabuki theatre on the cultural landscape of the continent. The intricacies of the actors' costumes, the dramatic poses, and the vivid colors all contribute to the captivating allure of this work of art.
