EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, created by the renowned artist Shunsho in the late 18th century, showcases two prominent Kabuki actors of the Edo period: Otani Hiroji III as Koga Saburo and Ichimura Uzaemon IX as the Devil of Kogakeyama. The scene is taken from the play "Kono Hana Yotsugi no Hachi no Ki," which was performed at the Ichimura Theater in the eleventh month of 1771. Koga Saburo, dressed in a beige hosoban cloak, carries on his shoulders the green-clad figure of the Devil of Kogakeyama, the spirit of Wakasa no Zenji Yasumura. The Devil, with his menacing expression and sharp teeth, is adorned in a vibrant lime-green kimono, adding an element of contrast to the muted tones of Saburo's attire. The print is a testament to the rich artistic school of Katsukawa, specifically the Katsukawa Shunshō and Katsumiyagawa Yusuke, who were known for their intricate and expressive designs. The print's folk life and folklore elements reflect the deep-rooted traditions of Japanese drama and entertainment during this era. This stunning piece of art is not only a significant historical document but also a visual representation of the fashion and apparel of the time, showcasing the intricate details of the actors' costumes and the vibrant colors that were popular during the Edo period. The print's legacy continues to inspire artists and scholars alike, making it an invaluable addition to any collection of Asian art.
