Admiral Sir Charles Napier (1786-1860), 1857. Artist: DJ Pound

Admiral Sir Charles Napier (1786-1860), 1857. Napier was a British naval officer whose sixty years in the Royal Navy included service in the Napoleonic Wars, Syrian War and the Crimean War, and a period commanding the Portuguese navy in the Liberal Wars. An innovator concerned with the development of iron ships, and an advocate of humane reform in the Royal Navy, he was also active in politics as a Liberal Member of Parliament and was probably the naval officer most widely known to the public in the early Victorian Era. From Englands Battles by Sea and Land, volume I: Russia and Turkey, by Lieutenant Colonel Williams, Published by The London Printing and Publishing Company (1857)

Painted by DJ Pound in 1857, the portrait captures the essence of this distinguished officer who served for sixty years in the Royal Navy. Admiral Napier's remarkable career spanned significant conflicts such as the Napoleonic Wars, Syrian War, and Crimean War. Known for his innovative ideas on iron ships and advocating for humane reform within the navy, he also made a mark in politics as a Liberal Member of Parliament. During the early Victorian Era, he was widely recognized by the public as one of Britain's most renowned naval officers. The engraving is taken from "England's Battles by Sea and Land" volume I: Russia and Turkey, authored by Lieutenant Colonel Williams and published by The London Printing and Publishing Company in 1857.
