EDITORS COMMENTS
The Adoration of the Magi," painted by Jan Adriaensz. van Staveren in the mid-17th century, is a captivating masterpiece of Baroque art currently housed in the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Verviers, Belgium. This exquisite oil on canvas painting depicts the biblical story of the visit of the Magi, or Three Wise Men, to the newborn Christ Child. According to the Gospel of Matthew, the Magi, Balthasar, Caspar, and Melchior, came from the east to pay homage to the King of Kings, bringing precious gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. In this painting, we see the holy family in the center, with Mary in adoration, her gaze fixed on the infant Jesus. The Christ Child reaches out in welcome to the approaching Magi, while Joseph looks on with a protective expression. The Magi are shown in regal attire, their faces filled with wonder and reverence as they pay homage to the newborn King. The Virgin Mary, dressed in rich robes, sits on a makeshift throne, surrounded by the simple beauty of the nativity scene. In the background, shepherds gather around, having been alerted to the birth of the Messiah by the star in the night sky. Jan Adriaensz. van Staveren masterfully captures the essence of this holy night, with the warm glow of the oil paint illuminating the scene and drawing the viewer into the sacred moment. The painting is a testament to the power of faith and the universal draw of the Christmas story, inviting us to contemplate the miraculous birth of Jesus and the adoration of the Magi.
