EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1876, depicts the Agricultural Labourers' Union in session at the Memorial Hall in Farringdon-Street, London. The Union, with over a thousand delegates in attendance from various regions, was a significant moment in the agricultural labor movement of the 19th century. The room was filled to capacity, with most laborers wearing sashes and rosettes bearing the Union's initials. The primary objective of the conference was to bolster the efforts of Mr. Trevelyan in relation to his upcoming motion regarding electoral reform. After listening to several speakers, resolutions were passed in favor of making the county franchise equal to that of the borough franchise. A petition to the House of Commons in support of this measure was then adopted, and each delegate present signed it as a show of solidarity. The photograph offers a unique glimpse into the fashion and apparel of the time, with the laborers dressed in simple work clothes. The scene is further enhanced by the intricate handwriting and lettering on the papers and petitions. This image, taken from the Illustrated London News, is an essential historical document that captures the spirit and determination of the agricultural laborers during a pivotal moment in their struggle for political representation.
