Ahmed Orabi Pasha, Egyptian general and rebel, 1900. Artist: Frederic Villiers
Ahmed Orabi Pasha, Egyptian general and rebel, 1900. Ahmed Orabi was an Egyptian general who rebelled against the rule of the khedive and European domination of Egypt in 1879 in what came to be known as the Orabi Revolt. Fearing that Egypt under Orabi might default on loans and close the Suez Canal, the British invaded in 1883. Orabi was captured after his army was defeated at the Battle of Tel al-Kebir. The khedive sentenced him to death, but under British pressure the sentence was commuted and he was exiled to Ceylon for the rest of his life. Portrait in AM Broadleys How we Defended Arabi and his Friends. A print from The Life and Times of Queen Victoria, by Robert Wilson, Volume IV, Cassell and Company, London, Paris, New York, Melbourne, 1900

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Ahmed Orabi Pasha, an influential Egyptian general and rebel who played a significant role in shaping Egypt's history. Taken in 1900 by artist Frederic Villiers, this portrait showcases Orabi's commanding presence with his strong physique, full beard, and piercing gaze. Orabi was a key figure in the Orabi Revolt of 1879, where he led a rebellion against the rule of the khedive (ruler) and European dominance over Egypt. This revolt posed a threat to British interests as they feared potential economic consequences such as loan defaults and closure of the vital Suez Canal. In response, the British invaded Egypt in 1883 and defeated Orabi's army at the Battle of Tel al-Kebir. Despite being sentenced to death by the khedive, international pressure led to his sentence being commuted to exile on Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) for life. This image serves as a reminder of Orabi's unwavering nationalism and determination to fight for Egyptian independence against colonial powers. Frederic Villiers skillfully portrays not only Orabi's physical attributes but also his resilience as a leader through this engraving. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to this nineteenth-century historical moment while emphasizing its significance within Victorian-era politics. This powerful portrait is part of Robert Wilson's comprehensive work "The Life and Times of Queen Victoria" published in 1900. It stands as both an artistic masterpiece capturing an iconic figure from Egypt's past and a testament to Ahmed Orabi Pasha’s enduring legacy in Egyptian history.
