EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in European history - the meeting between Alexander I, Emperor of Russia, and Napoleon Bonaparte of France at Tilsit in 1807. The image shows the two powerful leaders sitting together inside a tent, engaged in intense discussion and negotiation. The Treaty of Tilsit, which was signed during this meeting on June 25th, marked the end of the War of the Fourth Coalition. Prussia, Saxony, and Russia had fought against France but were ultimately defeated. The Battles of Jena and Auerstadt resulted in decisive victories for Napoleon's forces while Friedland saw him rout the Russians. In this photograph, we witness an intriguing juxtaposition between these two influential figures. Alexander I is portrayed as regal and composed while Napoleon exudes confidence with his military uniform. Their presence within this simple tent symbolizes their equal status as they discuss matters that would shape Europe's future. This wood engraving from the late 19th century offers us a glimpse into an important moment where power dynamics shifted on both national and international levels. It serves as a reminder of how historical events can be captured through artistry to preserve significant moments for generations to come.
