The Alfred Free Grammar-School, Wantage, Berkshire, 1850. Sketch of the proposed building [a memorial in commemoration of the thousandth anniversary of the birth of Alfred the Great], ...in the style of the first period of pointed architecture prevailing in the 13th century...The edifice is to be built of Cirencester stone...The School will provide accommodation for seventy scholars...Mr. J. B. Clacy, of Reading, is the architect; and the contract for the work has been taken by Messrs. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, hailing from the mid-19th century, showcases an impression of The Alfred Free Grammar-School in Wantage, Berkshire. The image is a sketch of the proposed building, designed as a memorial commemorating the thousandth anniversary of the birth of Alfred the Great. The architectural style reflects the first period of pointed architecture prevalent in the 13th century, with the edifice intended to be constructed from Cirencester stone. The School was planned to accommodate seventy scholars, and the architect for this project was Mr. J.B. Clacy of Reading. The contract for the construction was awarded to Messrs. Hunt and Kent, of Wantage. The Governors of the Wantage Town Lands had long expressed their desire to revive their Grammar School and establish a cost-effective and efficient educational institution for the middle classes in their community. This institution aimed to provide not only a rudimentary understanding of Latin but also a modern education. The Illustrated London News published this engraving in 1850, showcasing the exterior of the proposed neo-Gothic structure, which embodied the Victorian Gothic revival trend of the time. This print offers a glimpse into the architectural and educational landscape of 19th-century Britain.
