EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the passage of the Iron Gates in Algeria, dating back to 1845. The image showcases the influence of French colonialism in North Africa during the 19th century, providing a glimpse into both the warfare and mountain scenery that characterized this era. Created by a renowned French artist and copied from a painting, this print sheds light on the challenges faced by French forces as they sought to subdue hostile tribes in Algeria. Various official despatches reveal that pacifying these tribes was no easy task. Marshal Bugeaud's account details his march through the Matmatas mountains in search of absconding tribes and his efforts to punish those involved in revolt. Despite encountering vigorous resistance from Arab fighters during several skirmishes, the French emerged victorious each time. The Marshal concludes with optimism, stating that fear had struck all insurgents in eastern Oran province, leading him to anticipate numerous submissions soon. This historic moment is immortalized within this black-and-white engraving sourced from "Illustrated London News" - an invaluable record of events at that time. The print not only highlights France's imperialistic ambitions but also provides insight into Algerian geography and culture during this period. It serves as a reminder of both historical conquests and ongoing struggles for independence across nations worldwide.
