Ambulance for the Wounded, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Ambulance for the Wounded, 1854. Crimean War: "Ambulance" or Hospital-cart, for removing the wounded from the battle-field...It is a light two-wheeled vehicle, on indiarubber springs. In front is a seat capable of accommodating four persons, who are not incapacitated by their wounds from sitting upright - a broad leather strap, buckled in front, giving them increased security. In the interior...stretchers are slung lengthwise, for a similar number, whose wounds are of a more serious nature. Should circumstances render immediate amputation necessary, a board is let down behind, and serves for an amputating-table. Various appliances for the comfort of the wounded, including a vessel for heating water, broth, &c. are snugly packed underneath....the Emperor of the French...has since had a large number constructed for the French army on the same plan'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled "Ambulance for the Wounded," was published in the Illustrated London News in 1854, during the height of the Crimean War. The photograph depicts a two-wheeled ambulance, designed to transport wounded soldiers from the battlefield to medical facilities. The vehicle, constructed on indiarubber springs, features a seat for four able-bodied wounded soldiers in front, while stretchers for more seriously injured soldiers are slung lengthwise in the interior. In case of emergency, a board could be let down to serve as an amputating table. The ambulance, a testament to the advancements in road transport during the Victorian era, was a significant improvement from earlier methods of transporting the wounded. The vehicle's lightweight construction and comfortable interior provided a measure of security and ease for the soldiers during their journey to safety. The design of this ambulance was so effective that it gained the approval of the Emperor of France, who ordered a large number of them for the French army. The image is a poignant reminder of the compassionate efforts to care for the wounded during times of war, and the technological innovations that made a difference in the lives of soldiers on the battlefield. The "Ambulance for the Wounded" is a powerful representation of the human spirit and the ingenuity of the 19th century. This engraving, a treasure from the pages of the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the past and the sacrifices made during the Crimean War.
