Ancient "cist", found in Westminster Abbey, 1860. Example of...a "cist" as it was called, about four feet long and eighteen inches square. This is not distinguished by any of the curious and characteristic "signs" or figures designating its contents, but was probably one of those described in the Bishop of Exeter's quaint Calendar, as Unus planus cistus, ferro ligatus, cum quatuor serruris (a plain cist, bound with iron, with four locks). It is divided into four compartments, to each of which is a separate lid. Many portions of the ironwork - the hinges and flaps of the locks especially - are delicately tooled with a flowing pattern'. EDITORS COMMENTS
[Caption] This photograph, taken in 1860, showcases an ancient "cist" discovered in Westminster Abbey. The creator of the image remains unknown. The cist, approximately four feet long and eighteen inches square, is an intriguing example of medieval craftsmanship. Unlike other such finds, it lacks the distinctive signs or figures that typically mark the contents within. Instead, it may have been one of the "plain cists, bound with iron, with four locks" described in the Bishop of Exeter's Calendar as Unus planus cistus, ferro ligatus, cum quatuor serruris. The cist is divided into four separate compartments, each with its own lid. Many portions of the ironwork, including the hinges and flaps of the locks, are delicately tooled with a flowing pattern, showcasing the exquisite detail and craftsmanship of the time. This ancient container, with its mysterious origins and intricate design, offers a glimpse into the rich history and artistic achievements of the Middle Ages. This photograph, published in the "Illustrated London News," provides a valuable record of this fascinating artifact. The black and white image, reminiscent of the 19th century, captures the essence of the past and serves as a testament to the enduring allure of historical discoveries. The wooden container, with its iron fittings and engraved patterns, stands as a reminder of the intricate paperwork and records that have shaped our understanding of the past.
