Andre Massena, French soldier
Andre Massena, French soldier. Regarded as one of Napoleons greatest generals, Massena (1758-1817) first distinguished himself in the revolutionary wars. He commanded French forces in Italy after the Battle of Marengo in 1800. Made a Marshal in 1804, Massena was then dismissed for looting. He was recalled to service in 1809 to fight against the Fifth Coalition, and in 1810 commanded the invasion of Portugal in the Peninsular War. Massena supported the Bourbons on their restoration and refused to join Napoleon when he returned from exile on Elba in 1814

This print showcases the renowned French soldier, Andre Massena. Widely regarded as one of Napoleon's greatest generals, Massena's military prowess and strategic brilliance left an indelible mark on history. Born in 1758, Massena first rose to prominence during the revolutionary wars, where he displayed exceptional leadership skills. Following his remarkable performance at the Battle of Marengo in 1800, he assumed command of French forces in Italy. Recognizing his immense contributions, he was appointed as a Marshal in 1804. However, not immune to controversy, Massena faced dismissal due to allegations of looting. Nevertheless, his undeniable talent prompted his recall to service in 1809 for combat against the Fifth Coalition. In 1810, he spearheaded the invasion of Portugal during the Peninsular War. What sets Massena apart is not only his military achievements but also his unwavering loyalty and principles. When Napoleon returned from exile on Elba in 1814 seeking support from former allies like Massena, he staunchly refused and instead supported the restoration efforts by backing the Bourbons. This striking portrait captures both strength and determination etched onto Massena's face—a testament to a man who dedicated himself wholeheartedly to serving his country and leading troops into battle with unwavering resolve.
