EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed French soldier, Andre Massena, in all his military glory. Painted by Delpech around 1820, this portrait captures the essence of a man who is regarded as one of Napoleon's greatest generals. Born in 1758, Massena first made a name for himself during the revolutionary wars and went on to command French forces in Italy after the Battle of Marengo in 1800. His exceptional leadership skills earned him the title of Marshal in 1804; however, he was later dismissed due to allegations of looting. In 1809, Massena was called back into service to fight against the Fifth Coalition and played a pivotal role in commanding the invasion of Portugal during the Peninsular War. Despite his loyalty towards Napoleon initially, Massena ultimately supported the Bourbons upon their restoration and refused to join Napoleon when he returned from exile on Elba in 1814. This engraving not only portrays an iconic figure from history but also represents an era defined by intense warfare and political upheaval. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth and intensity to this powerful image, emphasizing both Massena's resolute determination as well as his unwavering commitment to his country. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece of artistry, we are reminded of Andre Massena's significant contributions to France's military legacy and how he left an indelible mark on European history through his strategic brilliance on countless battlefields.
