Andre Massena, French soldier, c1830. Regarded as one of Napoleons greatest generals, Massena (1758-1817) first distinguished himself in the revolutionary wars. He commanded French forces in Italy after the Battle of Marengo in 1800. Made a Marshal in 1804, Massena was then dismissed for looting. He was recalled to service in 1809 to fight against the Fifth Coalition, and in 1810 commanded the invasion of Portugal in the Peninsular War. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Andre Massena, a prominent French soldier from the early 19th century. Known as one of Napoleon's greatest generals, Massena's military prowess and strategic brilliance were widely recognized during his time. Born in 1758, he first gained distinction in the revolutionary wars before assuming command of French forces in Italy following the Battle of Marengo in 1800. In recognition of his exceptional leadership skills, Massena was appointed as a Marshal in 1804. However, his career suffered a setback when he was dismissed due to allegations of looting. Nevertheless, he was called back into service in 1809 to combat the Fifth Coalition and subsequently led the invasion of Portugal during the Peninsular War in 1810. Interestingly, despite being associated with Napoleon's regime for many years, Massena supported the Bourbons upon their restoration and refused to join Napoleon upon his return from exile on Elba Island in 1814. The print captures Massena's commanding presence and military uniform adorned with distinguished epaulettes. It offers an insight into this remarkable figure who played a significant role not only within France but also across Europe during this tumultuous period marked by war and political upheaval.
