EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Andrew Hull Foote, an esteemed American Civil War admiral who served from 1862 to 1867. The artist, G Stodart, skillfully portrays Foote's commanding presence in his military uniform as he gazes confidently into the distance. Foote's remarkable career was marked by bravery and sacrifice. In a pivotal moment during the war, he led a daring attack on Fort Donelson, a Confederate stronghold. However, this act of valor came at a great cost as Foote suffered serious wounds during the assault. Despite his injuries, Foote continued to serve his country with distinction. He retired from active duty but was promoted to Rear-Admiral and appointed chief of the Bureau of Equipment and Recruiting. This role allowed him to contribute significantly to the Union Navy's operations. The flag draped behind Admiral Foote serves as a powerful symbol of patriotism and unity during this tumultuous period in American history. It proudly displays the stars and stripes that represent our nation's ideals. This engraving is taken from volume II of "The War with the South: A History of the Late Rebellion" authored by Robert Tomes and Benjamin G Smith in 1862-1867.
