Anne Boleyn, 1935

Anne Boleyn, 1935. Anne, Marchioness of Pembroke (c1507-1536), also called Ann Bolin and Anne Bullen, (the original medieval English pronunciation) was the second wife and queen consort of Henry VIII and mother of Queen Elizabeth I. Anne was imprisoned in the Tower of London on charges of adultery with her brother and four other men, and of conspiring with them against the kings life. She was beheaded, and Henry was betrothed to Jane Seymour the following day. From Kings & Queens of England - A Series of 50. [John Player & Sons, London, 1935]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Anne Boleyn, the Marchioness of Pembroke, who lived during the 16th century. Anne was famously known as the second wife and queen consort of King Henry VIII, as well as being the mother of Queen Elizabeth I. However, her life took a tragic turn when she was accused of adultery with her brother and four other men, along with conspiring against the king's life. As a result, she was imprisoned in the Tower of London and ultimately beheaded. The portrait captures Anne's direct gaze and regal presence. She is adorned with exquisite jewelry, including a stunning headdress embellished with pearls that accentuate her elegance. The colorized image allows us to appreciate every intricate detail of this historical figure. This particular photograph originates from "Kings & Queens of England - A Series of 50" published by John Player & Sons in London in 1935. It serves as a reminder not only of Anne Boleyn's significant role within British history but also highlights the craftsmanship involved in creating such cigarette card prints. As we admire this remarkable portrayal, let us remember Anne Boleyn for her strength and resilience amidst tumultuous times—a woman whose legacy continues to fascinate generations even centuries later.
