Anne, Queen of Great Britain, c1796

Anne, Queen of Great Britain, c1796. Anne (1665-1714) was the daughter of James II, deposed by William of Orange in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The last Stuart monarch, she came to the throne after the death of William in 1702, and became the first monarch of the Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland after the signing of the Act of Union in 1707. Her reign saw a decline of the power of the crown in favour of that of ministers as well as the development of a two party system of politics. Her inability to produce an heir precipitated a succession crisis, with parliament passing legislation to hand the crown to the House of Hanover in order to prevent the Catholic Old Pretender, James Francis Edward Stuart, from claiming the throne

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Queen Anne of Great Britain, captured in the late 18th century. Anne, born in 1665 as the daughter of James II, faced a tumultuous path to the throne due to the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Despite these challenges, she became the last Stuart monarch and ascended to power after William's death in 1702. As queen, Anne played a pivotal role in shaping British history. Her reign witnessed a shift in power from the crown to ministers and marked the emergence of a two-party political system. However, her inability to produce an heir created a succession crisis that led Parliament to pass legislation favoring the House of Hanover over Catholic claimants. In this enchanting portrait, Queen Anne exudes grace and regality. Dressed resplendently in vibrant colors befitting her status as ruler, she personifies strength and dignity. The artist has skillfully captured her likeness with intricate details that highlight her royal lineage. Queen Anne's legacy is one defined by both triumphs and challenges. While she successfully navigated through political complexities during her reign, it was ultimately marred by personal struggles regarding succession. This print serves as a testament to her significant contributions as well as an enduring reminder of an era characterized by change and transformation within British monarchy.
