Painted by J Johnson in 1886, this portrait showcases Van Diemen's distinguished appearance with his elaborate clothing, hat, and collar. Van Diemen served as the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1636 until his death in 1645. During his tenure, he sponsored numerous expeditions that explored the oceans to the south of Indonesia. One notable result of these explorations was the discovery of Tasmania by Abel Tasman in 1642, which led to its naming after Van Diemen. The print is part of the Picturesque Atlas of Australasia series by Andrew Garran and was illustrated under Frederic B Schell's supervision. It provides a glimpse into both the seventeenth-century colonialist era and nineteenth-century artistic techniques.
