The Apocalypse: The Angel Gives St. John the Book to Eat, 1546-1556. Creator: Jean Duvet (French

The Apocalypse: The Angel Gives St. John the Book to Eat, 1546-1556. This print is part of a bound volume of works illustrating the a narrative of the Apocalypse, taken from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. The 23 engravings in the series occupied the artist for a number of years and represent his greatest artistic achievement. The museums volume is one of only seven known complete sets. Jean Duvet was one of the first major printmakers in France and one of the most original artists of the 1500s. Although he worked mostly in the provincial city of Langres, he became aware of Italian art through the circulation of prints--notably those of Marcantonio Raimondi. His solidly modeled human figures reflect the influence of the Italian High Renaissance. Duvet, however, developed an idiosyncratic, highly artificial style with crowded compositions that ignore rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Jean Duvet's masterpiece, "The Apocalypse: The Angel Gives St. John the Book to Eat" created between 1546 and 1556. Part of a bound volume illustrating the narrative of the Apocalypse from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible, this print is a remarkable representation of Duvet's artistic brilliance. Comprising 23 engravings that took several years to complete, this series stands as his greatest achievement and only seven complete sets are known to exist today. Duvet, one of France's pioneering printmakers during the 16th century, possessed an unparalleled originality in his work. While primarily based in Langres, he was exposed to Italian art through circulating prints by artists like Marcantonio Raimondi. Influenced by the Italian High Renaissance, Duvet skillfully crafted solidly modeled human figures with remarkable attention to detail. However, what truly sets him apart is his idiosyncratic style characterized by crowded compositions that disregard rational space for ornamental surface patterns. Preserved by Heritage Art/Heritage Images, this print allows us to appreciate not only Duvet's technical mastery but also his ability to convey complex narratives through visual storytelling. As we gaze upon this image capturing a pivotal moment when an angel presents St. John with a sacred book for consumption, we are transported into a world where divine revelations unfold amidst intricate designs and symbolic elements. Through its historical significance and artistic ingenuity, "The Apocalypse: The Angel Gives St. John the Book to Eat" continues to inspire awe and fascination among art enthusiasts worldwide.
