The Apocalypse: The Angel Shows St. John the Fountain of Living Water, 1546-1556. Creator
The Apocalypse: The Angel Shows St. John the Fountain of Living Water, 1546-1556. This print is part of a bound volume of works illustrating the a narrative of the Apocalypse, taken from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. The 23 engravings in the series occupied the artist for a number of years and represent his greatest artistic achievement. The museums volume is one of only seven known complete sets. Jean Duvet was one of the first major printmakers in France and one of the most original artists of the 1500s. Although he worked mostly in the provincial city of Langres, he became aware of Italian art through the circulation of prints--notably those of Marcantonio Raimondi. His solidly modeled human figures reflect the influence of the Italian High Renaissance. Duvet, however, developed an idiosyncratic, highly artificial style with crowded compositions that ignore rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Apocalypse: The Angel Shows St. John the Fountain of Living Water" created by Jean Duvet between 1546 and 1556. Part of a bound volume illustrating the narrative of the Apocalypse from the Book of Revelation, this particular print is a testament to Duvet's artistic brilliance and remains one of his most significant achievements. Only seven complete sets of these engravings are known to exist, making this museum's volume an invaluable treasure. Duvet, a prominent French printmaker and one of the most innovative artists during the 16th century, primarily worked in Langres but was influenced by Italian art through circulating prints like those by Marcantonio Raimondi. In this piece, Duvet combines elements from both Italian High Renaissance art and his own idiosyncratic style. The solidly modeled human figures reflect his exposure to Italian techniques, while he deviates from traditional composition norms with crowded scenes that disregard rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns. Heritage Art/Heritage Images beautifully captures every intricate detail in this photo print, allowing viewers to appreciate Duvet's mastery firsthand. It serves as a visual gateway into an era where religious narratives were brought to life through breathtaking artwork. This photograph preserves not only history but also invites us to delve into the depths of our imagination as we witness St. John being shown the awe-inspiring Fountain of Living Water by an angelic figure amidst apocalyptic surroundings.
