The Apocalypse: The Beast with Seven Heads and Ten Horns, 1546-1556. Creator: Jean Duvet (French
The Apocalypse: The Beast with Seven Heads and Ten Horns, 1546-1556. This print is part of a bound volume of works illustrating the a narrative of the Apocalypse, taken from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. The 23 engravings in the series occupied the artist for a number of years and represent his greatest artistic achievement. The museums volume is one of only seven known complete sets. Jean Duvet was one of the first major printmakers in France and one of the most original artists of the 1500s. Although he worked mostly in the provincial city of Langres, he became aware of Italian art through the circulation of prints--notably those of Marcantonio Raimondi. His solidly modeled human figures reflect the influence of the Italian High Renaissance. Duvet, however, developed an idiosyncratic, highly artificial style with crowded compositions that ignore rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Apocalypse: The Beast with Seven Heads and Ten Horns" a masterpiece created by Jean Duvet between 1546 and 1556. This particular print is part of a rare bound volume that illustrates the narrative of the Apocalypse, as described in the Revelation of Saint John from the Bible. Jean Duvet, an influential French artist during the 16th century, dedicated several years to creating this series of engravings, which are considered his greatest artistic achievement. Only seven complete sets of these prints are known to exist, making this museum's volume a truly remarkable treasure. Duvet's work demonstrates his unique artistic style and originality. While primarily based in Langres, a provincial city in France, he was exposed to Italian art through circulated prints by artists like Marcantonio Raimondi. This influence can be seen in Duvet's solidly modeled human figures that reflect elements of the Italian High Renaissance. However, what sets Duvet apart is his idiosyncratic approach characterized by crowded compositions and ornamental surface patterns that disregard rational space. These distinctive features contribute to the overall visual impact and intensity conveyed in "The Apocalypse: The Beast with Seven Heads and Ten Horns". Through this print provided by Heritage Art/Heritage Images, viewers have an opportunity to appreciate both the historical significance and artistic brilliance encapsulated within Jean Duvet's extraordinary creation.
