EDITORS COMMENTS
Arctic Foxes and Birds: A New Arrival at London Zoo, 1854 This photograph print, recently acquired by the Zoological Society, showcases an exciting new addition to the Regent's Park menagerie. The image, entitled "Arctic Foxes and Birds, just received by the Zoological Society, 1854," documents the arrival of a significant collection of Arctic animals from the territories of the Hudson's Bay Company in Canada. The birds featured in this photograph include three magnificent American Eagle Owls, five rare white Arctic Grouse, a single Ruffed Grouse, and a young White-headed Eagle. The Arctic Foxes, captured in this image, are the White Arctic, Red, and Silver varieties. Unfortunately, one Silver Fox has recently passed away. Accompanying the foxes are two young Black Bears. These precious specimens, presented to the Zoological Society by Mr. William George Smith of the Hudson's Bay House, have enriched the already impressive collection at the London Zoo. The arrival of these animals, as reported in the "Illustrated London News" of 1854, marked an essential contribution to the scientific study and public appreciation of these magnificent creatures. The photograph print, with its intricate details and beautiful composition, offers a glimpse into the industrial era's fascination with the natural world. It serves as a reminder of the significant role that zoos and collections played in the exploration, documentation, and preservation of the world's diverse wildlife during the nineteenth century.
