Al-Adil I, the Ayyubid Sultan of Egypt and Syria, is seen here on horseback, surrounded by his soldiers and knights, as they prepare to leave the city. The scene is taken from the French chanson de geste "Li rommans de Godefroy de Buillon et de Salehadin," which recounts the Crusade of Henry VI in 1197. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this gouache on parchment illustration are characteristic of the Gothic style prevalent during the late Middle Ages. The composition is dynamic, with the figures of Al-Adil I and his soldiers arranged in a diagonal formation, leading the viewer's eye through the scene.
