Arrival of the Prince of Wales at Lisbon, 1876. Creator: Unknown
Arrival of the Prince of Wales at Lisbon, 1876. The future King Edward VII visits Portugal. The Prince of Wales left Madrid...by a special railway train through Ciudad Real and Badajoz, travelling through the night; he arrived at Lisbon...at three in the afternoon. His Royal Highness was received at the station by King Louis, his father, King Ferdinand, two of the Ministers, the British Consul, Admirals Seymour and Phillimore, the Staff Commander of the Serapis, and the dignitaries of the Portuguese Court. The Prince alighted from the carriage with the President of the Council, who had attended him during his journey from the Spanish frontier. He exchanged a cordial greeting with King Louis and King Ferdinand. The members of his suite and the Court personages were then presented, and the band played "God Save the Queen". EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic moment of the Arrival of the Prince of Wales at Lisbon in 1876. The future King Edward VII of Britain, dressed in a formal suit and top hat, steps down from the train with a warm greeting from King Louis I and King Ferdinand of Portugal. The scene is filled with a sense of international camaraderie and political diplomacy, as the Prince is surrounded by Portuguese dignitaries, British consuls, and naval officers. The crowd on the platform, a mix of men and women, gazes at the royal figures with admiration and curiosity. The band plays "God Save the Queen" as the Prince is officially welcomed to Portugal, marking the beginning of a significant visit between the two European nations. This engraving, originally published in the Illustrated London News in 1876, offers a glimpse into the rich history of international relations and royal protocol in the late 19th century.
