Asian traders in front of the datsan, 1880. Creator: Nikolai Nikolaevich Petrov
Asian traders in front of the datsan, 1880.
From a collection of 71 items (photographs and negatives on glass) made in the late 19th century and early 20th century by the famous revolutionary-populist and social and political activist N.A. Charushin (1851-1937) and by N. Petrov. Charushin began serving a hard labor sentence in the Transbaikal Territory in 1878. The collection illustrates aspects of Transbaikal history in this period, with a particular emphasis on the tea trade with China, which at that time was one of the main branches of the economy of the region. The photographs show various technological processes of growing and preparing tea, sections of trade routes, as well as views of China, Mongolia, Buryatia, and various towns and villages of Transbaikal, as well as images of local people of different ethnicities and nationalities. Several of the photographs, including one of the large and imposing Russian consulate, were taken in Urga, at that time the capital of Outer Mongolia (and known today as Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Asian traders in front of the datsan, 1880," takes us back to a significant period in history. Created by Nikolai Nikolaevich Petrov, this image is part of a remarkable collection that sheds light on the Transbaikal region's rich past during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The collection was curated by N.A. Charushin, a renowned revolutionary-populist and social activist who played an instrumental role in capturing these invaluable moments. Charushin himself endured great hardships, serving a hard labor sentence in the Transbaikal Territory starting from 1878.
This particular photograph offers us a glimpse into one of the main economic activities of the region at that time – tea trade with China. Asian traders are depicted standing proudly in front of the datsan, showcasing their cultural heritage and commercial prowess.
Beyond its focus on trade routes and economic processes related to tea production, this collection also provides glimpses into various regions such as China, Mongolia, Buryatia, and different towns and villages within Transbaikal. It beautifully captures not only breathtaking landscapes but also portraits of local people from diverse ethnicities and nationalities.
One notable image within this compilation portrays Urga (now Ulaanbaatar), then known as Outer Mongolia's capital city. The imposing Russian consulate stands tall amidst its surroundings—a testament to Russia's influence during that era.
Through Petrov's lens, we are transported back to an era where cultures converged through commerce while simultaneously preserving their unique identities. This print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and historical artifact—an invaluable window into our shared past.
