EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the assassination of Henry, Duke of Guise. In December 1588, this influential figure who founded the Catholic League and played a crucial role in the French Wars of Religion met his untimely demise at the Chateau de Blois. The image showcases the bedchamber where this tragic event unfolded. The composition exudes an eerie atmosphere as it transports us back to that fateful day. The room is dimly lit, casting long shadows on the walls, adding to the somber mood. The details captured by the unknown creator are remarkable - from the intricate engravings on furniture to every fold in Duke Guise's clothing. As we delve into history through this photograph, we can't help but ponder over Catherine de Medici's involvement in this crime. Being an opponent of her son King Henry III, Duke Guise fell victim to his own bodyguards known as Forty-five guards. This print is part of "Cassells Illustrated Universal History" compiled by Edmund Ollier and published in 1890. It serves as a visual reminder of past events that shaped nations and altered destinies. As we gaze upon it today, let us remember those who fought for their beliefs during turbulent times centuries ago - their stories forever etched within these monochrome frames.
