Auguste Dubail, French First World War general, (1926)
Auguste Dubail, French First World War general, (1926). Dubail (1851-1934) was commander of the French 1st Army at the beginning of the war. Although unsuccessful in trying to recapture Lorraine from the Germans, the 1st Armys defence of the heights of the Meuse was crucial in preventing the Germans from routing the French armies in the wars opening stages. Promoted in 1915 to command the Eastern Army Group, Dubail predicted the coming German offensive at Verdun, but his warning and his request for artillery reinforcements were ignored. When the German blow did fall, Dubail was made a scapegoat and dismissed from his command by Joseph Joffre, the French Commander-in-Chief. He saw out the rest of the war as military governor of Paris

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Auguste Dubail, a prominent French general during the First World War. Taken in 1926, it provides a glimpse into the life and achievements of this remarkable military leader. Dubail commanded the French 1st Army at the onset of the war and played a crucial role in defending the heights of the Meuse, preventing German forces from overpowering French armies in the early stages of conflict. Despite his strategic foresight and efforts to warn against an impending German offensive at Verdun, Dubail was unjustly dismissed from his command by Joseph Joffre, then-French Commander-in-Chief. Nevertheless, he continued to serve his country as military governor of Paris until the end of the war. In this portrait, General Dubail exudes strength and determination. His military uniform is impeccably adorned with various insignias denoting his rank and accomplishments. The distinguished moustache on his face adds an air of authority to his commanding presence. The photograph's colorization brings out every detail, allowing us to appreciate both its historical significance and artistic beauty. As we reflect upon this image, we are reminded not only of General Dubail's contributions but also those countless individuals who fought valiantly on behalf of their countries during one of history's most devastating conflicts – World War I.
