EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, taken by renowned American photography studio Harris & Ewing between 1910 and 1920, we see Bainbridge Colby, an accomplished attorney and politician who made significant strides in American politics during the early 20th century. Colby is seen here in a formal setting, dressed in a suit and tie, with a serious yet confident expression on his face. He was a key figure in the National Progressive Party and served as the Secretary of State of the United States under President Woodrow Wilson from 1913 to 1915. Born in Massachusetts in 1869, Colby began his legal career in New York City before moving to Washington D.C. to practice law. He quickly rose through the ranks of the Democratic Party and was appointed as Secretary of State by Wilson, following the controversial election of 1912. Colby's tenure as Secretary of State was marked by his efforts to improve diplomatic relations with Latin American countries and his role in negotiating the Peace Treaty of Versailles after World War I. After leaving the State Department, Colby continued to be involved in politics, co-founding the National Progressive Party with former President Theodore Roosevelt. He ran for the Senate in 1922 but was ultimately unsuccessful in his bid. Colby passed away in 1940, leaving behind a legacy as a dedicated public servant and a trailblazer in American politics. This photograph is part of the Harris & Ewing Collection at the Library of Congress, which includes over 40,000 glass negatives taken by the studio between 1910 and 1933. The collection is an invaluable resource for historians and researchers studying American history during this period.
