EDITORS COMMENTS
Barbara Palmer, Duchess of Cleveland (1640-1709), was a prominent figure in the English aristocracy during the Restoration period. Known earlier in her life as Lady Castlemaine, she rose to prominence as the favorite mistress of King Charles II of Great Britain and Ireland. This portrait of the Duchess, created by Robert Dunkarton in 1814, captures her allure and elegance. The Duchess is depicted wearing an extravagant black and white dress, a popular fashion choice during the 17th and 18th centuries. Her hair is styled in an elaborate, high-piled coif, adorned with pearls and other precious stones. The Duchess's regal bearing and captivating gaze convey her status as a noblewoman of great influence. The portrait was published in Samuel Woodburn's "Portraits of characters illustrious in British History from the beginning of the reign of Henry the Eighth to the end of the reign of James the Second," which was released in London in 1815. The image serves as a testament to the Duchess's enduring legacy and her significant role in British history. Barbara Palmer's life was marked by scandal and intrigue. She was married twice, first to the Earl of Castlemaine, and later to the Duke of Cleveland. Her relationship with King Charles II, however, was the most notorious and enduring. Despite the controversy surrounding her personal life, the Duchess of Cleveland remains an intriguing and fascinating figure in the annals of English history.
