EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 16th century painting, titled 'The Battle between Bahram Chubina and Sava Shah (image 2 of 9)', is an exquisite example of Islamic art from the Persian tradition. The creator of this masterpiece remains unknown, but it is believed to have originated from Shiraz, Iran, during the 1560s. The painting is executed in opaque watercolor heightened with gold and silver on paper and measures an impressive size. The scene depicts a pivotal moment in the epic poem 'Shahnameh' or 'The Book of Kings', a literary masterpiece by the Persian poet Ferdowsi. The poem recounts the heroic deeds of various kings and warriors from Iranian mythology and history. In this particular scene, we witness the battle between Bahram Chubin, a legendary hero and general under King Bahram V, and Sava Shah, a monstrous adversary. Bahram Chubin, depicted as a gallant and powerful rider, charges towards his enemy with a sharp blade in hand. Sava Shah, a fearsome figure with multiple heads and torsos, is shown on horseback, armed with a bow and arrow. The animals surrounding them, including lions and elephants, add to the chaotic and intense atmosphere of the battle. This painting is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Middle East and the enduring influence of the epic poem 'Shahnameh'. It is currently housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it continues to captivate and inspire visitors from around the world.
