The Beaucousin Collection at the National Gallery - a portrait, by Mabuse, 1860. Creator: Unknown
The Beaucousin Collection at the National Gallery - a portrait, by Mabuse, 1860. Engraving of a painting. The most recent accession to our National Gallery, at least of those which have been exposed to public scrutiny, is the collection of thirty-one pictures purchased last year from M. Edmond Beaucousin, at Paris, for some £5000 or £6000, we do not recollect the exact amount. John Mabuse was an important master of the Flemish school...His scriptural and historical works are of the highest class, but they are but little known in this country...He visited England in the reign of Henry VII. whose portrait he painted...The portrait before us is a fair average specimen of his works in this line. It represents a man dressed in black with fur over his shoulders, and a rosary in his hand - supposed judging from the architectural background, to be standing in a church'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Beaucousin Collection: A Hidden Gem Unveiled at the National Gallery - A Portrait by Mabuse, 1860 The National Gallery in London continues to amaze and intrigue art enthusiasts with its latest acquisition, the Beaucousin Collection. This significant addition to the gallery's impressive collection was purchased in Paris from M. Edmond Beaucousin for around £5000 or £6000 (approximately $63,000 or $80,000 in today's currency) in the previous year. The exact date of the acquisition is uncertain, but the excitement surrounding this discovery was palpable. John Mabuse, the creator of this masterpiece, was a renowned artist of the Flemish school, whose scriptural and historical works are of the highest caliber. However, his works are relatively unknown in this country. Mabuse's visit to England during the reign of Henry VII resulted in the painting of the monarch's portrait. The portrait in question, a fair representation of Mabuse's works in this genre, depicts a man dressed in black with fur over his shoulders and a rosary in his hand. The architectural background suggests that the man is standing in a church. This portrait, an engraving of which is shown above, is a testament to Mabuse's exceptional talent and a welcome addition to the National Gallery's collection. The acquisition of the Beaucousin Collection marks an exciting chapter in the National Gallery's history, providing a glimpse into the works of a master artist whose works have long been overlooked in this country. The portrait by Mabuse, 1860, is a reminder of the endless possibilities that await us in the world of art, and the joy of discovery that comes with it.
