EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Benjamin Smith Barton, an influential figure in American medicine and natural history. Born in 1766 and passing away in 1815, Barton's legacy as a physician and naturalist is captured beautifully in this engraving from 1896. Barton's significant contributions to academia are highlighted by his role as a professor of natural history and botany at the University of Philadelphia for over two decades. His groundbreaking work, "Elements of Botany" published in 1803, holds the distinction of being the first botanical textbook ever printed in the United States. Not only was Barton an accomplished scholar, but he also played a pivotal role behind-the-scenes during Meriweather Lewis' renowned trans-American expedition alongside William Clark from 1803 to 1806. As an advisor to Lewis, Barton shared his expertise on preserving specimens—an invaluable contribution that aided their scientific discoveries throughout their arduous journey. This portrait captures Barton's intellectual prowess with its striking profile view. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth and timelessness to this image, emphasizing his significance within eighteenth-century America. As we gaze upon this print today, we are reminded of Barton's lasting impact on both medical science and botanical studies—a true testament to his dedication as a doctor, scientist, professor, and pioneer within his field.
