Birds from the Crystal Palace Show, 1858. Creator: Smyth
Birds from the Crystal Palace Show, 1858. The severity of the weather...failed to chill the ardour of the lovers of birds. In crowds they rushed to the Crystal Palace, Sydenham, to see one of the most interesting and novel exhibitions ever witnessed. The show of canaries was first rate. The same may be said of the mule birds. Then there were some marvellously beautiful hybrids; and of foreign birds, parrots, parrakeets, waxbills, mocking-birds, cockatoos, etc. there was a choice variety. The directors had done their utmost to give eclat to the occasion, and by their arrangements may be said to have achieved the perfection of comfort, not only for the feathered tribes but also for the numerous visitors; and the public seemed to be keenly alive to its enjoyment, A happier set of faces could hardly be met with, and their involuntary exclamations testified the delight they felt in witnessing so much natural beauty. The tropical department of the Palace is well suited for exhibitions of this kind, and the birds were, no doubt, sorry to quit their delightful quarters'. From "Illustrated London News", 1858

Birds from the Crystal Palace Show, 1858
EDITORS COMMENTS
by Smyth captures a lively scene inside the Crystal Palace in Sydenham during one of the most intriguing and novel avian exhibitions of the time. Amidst the severity of the weather, bird enthusiasts flocked to the palace in large numbers, undeterred by the elements, to witness the impressive collection of avian species on display. The show featured an exceptional assortment of canaries, mule birds, and hybrids, as well as a diverse range of exotic birds such as parrots, parakeets, waxbills, and mockingbirds. The directors had gone to great lengths to ensure the comfort and well-being of both the birds and the visitors, creating an atmosphere of perfection. The tropical department of the palace was particularly well-suited for such exhibitions, and the birds appeared reluctant to leave their delightful quarters. Witnessing the natural beauty of these avian creatures brought great joy to the visitors, as evidenced by their happy faces and exclamations of delight. The "Illustrated London News" reported that the public was keenly alive to its enjoyment, making for a truly unforgettable experience. Smyth's photograph beautifully encapsulates the excitement and appreciation for the natural world that was on display at the Crystal Palace Show in 1858.
