Book of Hours (Use of Rouen): fol. 37v, c. 1470. Creator: Master of the Geneva Latini (French

Book of Hours (Use of Rouen): fol. 37v, c. 1470. In the late 1400s and early 1500s Rouen was an established and important center of book production. The citys cathedral had a wealthy chapter that spent large sums of money to commission books and to maintain its extensive library. The stationers and booksellers would have likely been concentrated in or near the cathedral precinct. This artist, named after a manuscript now in Geneva, was Rouens principal illuminator during the second half of the 1400s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a page from the "Book of Hours (Use of Rouen): fol. 37v" created around 1470 by the Master of the Geneva Latini, an esteemed French illuminator. During this period, Rouen emerged as a prominent hub for book production and boasted a flourishing library maintained by its affluent cathedral chapter. The intricate details and vibrant colors on this vellum manuscript are truly awe-inspiring. The artist's skillful use of gold accents adds a touch of opulence to the delicate ink and tempera illustrations. Every stroke exudes craftsmanship and devotion to their craft. It is fascinating to imagine how this exquisite piece would have been treasured during its time, likely held within the confines of Rouen's cathedral precinct where stationers and booksellers thrived. This particular artist, known as the Master of the Geneva Latini due to their association with a manuscript now housed in Geneva, was undoubtedly one of Rouen's most celebrated illuminators during the latter half of the fifteenth century. Now preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this remarkable print allows us to appreciate not only the artistic mastery but also provides insight into medieval book production techniques. It serves as a testament to both Rouen's cultural significance in that era and our enduring fascination with illuminated manuscripts today.
