The Börsen, Copenhagen, 1858. Creator: M. Jackson
The Borsen, Copenhagen, 1858. 17th-century building in the capital of Denmark. The Danish capital is a quaint, motherly old town, without any show; and looks as if it had not altered for years, and never would alter. The architecture is of the sober order, semi-rural, semi-urban, rarely Gothic; here and there a dismal palace stands on a torv or place; the animation is concentrated by the canals, where stands the Borsen (Exchange), a beautiful building, with spire of twisted dragons tails...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by M. Jackson in 1858, showcases The Borsen, or the Stock Exchange, located in the heart of Copenhagen, Denmark. The 17th-century building stands proudly against the backdrop of the quayside, with boats and sailing vessels anchored nearby. The architecture of Copenhagen is depicted as a charming, unaltered blend of the rural and urban, with a predominantly sober order. The Borsen, with its distinctive spire adorned with twisted dragons' tails, is a beautiful and animated focal point, drawing attention to the bustling activity of the canals. The Illustrated London News described Copenhagen as a 'quaint, motherly old town' that appeared untouched by time. The architecture, rarely Gothic in nature, is a testament to the city's rich history. The Borsen, a significant financial and cultural landmark, is a must-see attraction for tourists and travelers alike. This photograph, a stunning example of 19th-century engraving, transports us back in time, offering a glimpse into the past and the enduring charm of this European city.
