EDITORS COMMENTS
The Boston Police Strike, Massachusetts, USA, September 1919. This powerful print captures a pivotal moment in American history when the majority of Boston's police force went on strike in September 1919. In the midst of widespread civil disorder, a loyal policeman can be seen instructing a mounted State Guardsman. The strike was deemed by US President Woodrow Wilson as a 'crime against civilization', prompting State Governor Calvin Coolidge to intervene and restore order. Coolidge took decisive action by sacking 1100 striking officers and hiring 1574 replacements from unemployed World War I veterans. Coolidge's intervention not only brought an end to the strike but also provided better working conditions for the new officers, including higher salaries, increased holiday entitlements, and uniforms provided by the city – some of the very demands that their predecessors had fought for. This bold move catapulted Coolidge's political career forward and led to his nomination as Warren Harding's Vice-Presidential candidate for the 1920 election. The impact of this event reverberated throughout American society at large and forever changed labor relations in law enforcement. In this black-and-white image captured on an avenue in Boston during those tumultuous times, we witness both metaphorical and literal clashes between armed forces representing authority and those fighting for workers' rights. It serves as a poignant reminder of how historical events shape our present-day understanding of justice, politics, and social progress.
