Briar Rose (Dornroschen), 1836. Creator: Eugen Napoleon Neureuther (German, 1806-1862)
Briar Rose (Dornroschen), 1836. Fairy tales, folklore, and legends were understood as an important aspect of national and cultural heritage in 19th-century Germany. The interest in folk tales began as a literary phenomenon, but it soon infiltrated the visual arts. In his paintings and prints, Neureuther illustrated fairy tales and ballads of the period. In Grimms fairy tale Briar Rose, a princess and her kingdom are condemned to 100 years of sleep. According to the story, around the palace grew a thick hedge of briars, which every year grew higher until the castle was hidden from view. The duration of their sleep is suggested by the decorative border of wild flowers and vines that encroaches upon the castle

This print showcases "Briar Rose (Dornroschen)" by Eugen Napoleon Neureuther, a renowned German artist of the 19th century. During this period, fairy tales, folklore, and legends held immense significance as they were considered an integral part of Germany's national and cultural heritage. Initially popular in literature, these enchanting stories soon found their way into visual arts. Neureuther's artistic talent shines through his paintings and prints that beautifully depict various fairy tales and ballads from the era. In this particular artwork inspired by Grimm's fairy tale "Briar Rose" we witness a princess and her kingdom condemned to a deep slumber lasting 100 years. As the story goes, a dense hedge of briars gradually engulfs the palace over time until it becomes completely hidden from view. Neureuther cleverly portrays this passage of time with a decorative border adorned with wild flowers and vines encroaching upon the castle. The etching technique employed by Neureuther adds depth and texture to the artwork, enhancing its ethereal quality. This stunning piece not only captures the essence of Briar Rose but also reflects Germany's rich storytelling tradition during the 19th century. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art as part of their Heritage Art collection, this print serves as a testament to Neureuther's skillful interpretation of beloved folk tales while paying homage to Germany's cultural legacy.
