A Bridge of 12 Sazhens Length Across the Sosnovka River on the Votinovskoaia Railroad, 1909. Creator: Dorozhno-Stroitel'nyi Otdel
A Bridge of 12 Sazhens Length Across the Sosnovka River on the Votinovskoaia Railroad, 1909. Photographs documenting various stages in the construction of dirt roads in the Tomsk region by workers and engineers of the road-building department of the Russian Resettlement Administration. The albums date from 1906-8 and 1909. The Russian state paid for the construction of roads such as those depicted in the albums in order to connect settlers with a railroad line, a navigable river, or commercial-industrial centers. The overall purpose of the road-building program was to promote the colonization of the taiga (moist coniferous forest regions) of Siberia. The albums show the construction of roads in the region between the main line of the Trans-Siberian Railroad and the Chet and Kandat Rivers in Tomsk gubernia (governorate). EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in the history of infrastructure development in Siberia, Russia, taken in 1909. The image shows a bridge of twelve sazhens (approximately 27.2 meters or 90 feet) length, spanning the Sosnovka River on the Votinovskoaia Railroad. The bridge was built by the Dorozhno-Stroitel'nyi Otdel (Road-Building Department) of the Russian Resettlement Administration. The albums documenting the construction of this bridge and other roads in the Tomsk region date from 1906-1908 and 1909. The Russian government funded these road-building projects to connect settlers with the railroad line, a navigable river, or commercial-industrial centers. The overall objective of the road-building program was to promote the colonization of the taiga (moist coniferous forest regions) of Siberia. The photograph offers a glimpse into the engineering and labor efforts required to construct a bridge of this scale in a challenging terrain. The image shows the bridge's framework nearly complete, with workers and engineers in the process of installing the planks. The Sosnovka River flows calmly beneath the bridge, reflecting the clear blue sky above. The surrounding landscape is dotted with trees, providing a stark contrast to the man-made structure. This photograph is a testament to the determination and ingenuity of the workers and engineers who built the infrastructure necessary to connect settlers to the vast expanses of Siberia. It serves as a reminder of the historical significance of infrastructure development in shaping the settlement and economic growth of the region.
