A Bridge of 8 Sazhens Length. Mal'tsevsk-Novosibirsk Road, 1906-1908. Creator: Dorozhno-Stroitel'nyi Otdel
A Bridge of 8 Sazhens Length. Mal'tsevsk-Novosibirsk Road, 1906-1908. Photographs documenting various stages in the construction of dirt roads in the Tomsk region by workers and engineers of the road-building department of the Russian Resettlement Administration. The albums date from 1906-8 and 1909. The Russian state paid for the construction of roads such as those depicted in the albums in order to connect settlers with a railroad line, a navigable river, or commercial-industrial centers. The overall purpose of the road-building program was to promote the colonization of the taiga (moist coniferous forest regions) of Siberia. The albums show the construction of roads in the region between the main line of the Trans-Siberian Railroad and the Chet and Kandat Rivers in Tomsk gubernia (governorate). EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the construction of a bridge of extraordinary length, spanning eight sazhens, or approximately 21 meters, on the Mal'tsevsk-Novosibirsk Road in the Tomsk region during the late 1900s. The image is part of a collection of photographs documenting various stages in the construction of dirt roads by workers and engineers of the Dorozhno-Stroitel'nyi Otdel (Road Building Department) of the Russian Resettlement Administration. The Russian government funded the construction of roads like this one to connect settlers with a railroad line, a navigable river, or commercial-industrial centers, as part of an ambitious program to promote the colonization of the taiga (moist coniferous forest regions) of Siberia. The albums from which this photograph is taken date from 1906-8 and 1909. The bridge, with its wooden structure, blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape, which features a forested backdrop and a rustic hut in the foreground. The image offers a glimpse into the meeting of frontiers, as the road-building program extended the reach of Russian civilization into the vast Siberian wilderness. The photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the workers and engineers who built the roads, and serves as an important historical record of a pivotal moment in the colonization of Siberia. The Novosibirsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife houses this photograph, along with other valuable documents and artifacts from the Tomsk region of Russia. This image, with its rich historical context and scenic beauty, offers a unique perspective on the past and the challenges faced by those who ventured into the frontier of the Russian Empire.
