EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 17th-18th century print depicts Buddha Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha, in a serene and contemplative seated position. The image, of unknown origin, is believed to have been produced in South or Southeast Asia, possibly in Laos or another neighboring country. The copper alloy print, which is richly colored and intricately detailed, showcases the masterful craftsmanship of the artist. Buddha Shakyamuni is depicted wearing the traditional monastic robes and sits in the lotus position, symbolizing detachment from worldly desires and enlightenment. His right hand rests in his lap in the "dhyana mudra," or meditation gesture, while his left hand rests on his knee in the "bhumisparsha mudra," or earth-touching gesture, symbolizing his connection to the earth and his ability to touch the ground with the sole of his foot at will. The print is an excellent example of the artistic traditions of South and Southeast Asian art during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It is also a testament to the enduring influence of Buddhism in the region, which continues to be a significant part of the cultural heritage of many countries in Asia. This print is now part of the South Asian and Islamic Art collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it is available for scholarly research and public viewing. The print is a reminder of the rich artistic and cultural history of Asia and the importance of preserving and celebrating it for future generations.
