EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a unique artifact from the First World War era - a Bully beef can opener, dating back to 1914-1918. Crafted by an unknown creator, this cow-shaped metal can opener is painted in black and holds historical significance. Bully beef, also known as corned beef, was a staple food item made from salt-cured brisket of beef in gelatin. Its name possibly originates from the French word "bouilli" meaning boiled meat, which was consumed by French troops during Napoleonic times. Tins of bully beef were included in army rations until the Second World War. The can opener itself features an L-shaped blade attached to its body through screws. Above the blade sits a meticulously crafted metal cow's head while the body of the blade curves and loops back like a tail. This photograph not only highlights an intriguing piece of military equipment but also represents cultural heritage and history. It symbolizes the ingenuity and resourcefulness displayed during times of war when soldiers relied on simple tools for survival. Preserved at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in America, this object serves as a reminder of our nation's past conflicts and honors those who served bravely during World War I. Through such artifacts, we gain insight into technological advancements and everyday life experiences that shaped our country's history over a century ago.
