The Burning of the Vauxhall Railway Station, seen from Battersea-Bridge, 1856. Creator: Unknown
The Burning of the Vauxhall Railway Station, seen from Battersea-Bridge, 1856....a sudden alarm of fire arose, and the same instant it was discovered that a small ante-room adjoining the booking-office, and occupied by the clerk in charge, was in flames. In a very few moments the fire had extended to the booking office itself; and so remarkably rapid was its progress that the officials present, so far from being able to stay its ravages, were compelled to make a hasty retreat...the fire travelled with the rapidity ot electricity, seizing upon the whole of the offices, then extending to the ticket depots, and finally seizing upon the roof of the station; and burning both upwards and downwards, it assumed such a formidable aspect as to convince everyone that the entire station was doomed to be wholly destroyed...[fortunately] not a single person was injured'. EDITORS COMMENTS
The Burning of Vauxhall Railway Station, as Viewed from Battersea Bridge, 1856" is an evocative and historic photograph that captures the aftermath of a devastating fire that engulfed London's Vauxhall Railway Station. The exact creator of this image remains unknown, but it was first published in the Illustrated London News in 1856. The photograph presents a breathtaking view of the station in flames, with thick plumes of smoke billowing into the sky, casting an eerie orange glow over the scene. The station, located on the south bank of the River Thames, is seen in ruins, its roof and upper levels reduced to charred remains. The nearby Battersea Bridge, with its arched structure, stands as a stark contrast to the chaos unfolding below. The caption accompanying the photograph in the Illustrated London News provides a chilling account of the events that led to this scene. "A sudden alarm of fire arose," it reads, "and the same instant it was discovered that a small ante-room adjoining the booking-office, and occupied by the clerk in charge, was in flames." The fire spread rapidly, consuming the booking office and ticket depots before reaching the roof of the station. Despite the chaos and danger, no one was injured in the incident. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the destructive power of fire and the resilience of the human spirit. It also offers a glimpse into the past, providing a unique perspective on the history of London's transportation infrastructure.
