Bushing It - Camped for the Night, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Bushing It - Camped for the Night, 1850. British settlers in Australia....the Settlers Bushing it, and camped for the night, having wearied themselves with the chase of the kangaroo. This is one of the emigrant's delights...seated before his large fire-place in the dim twilight of evening, with outstretched legs, the little black pipe is made to do good service and true'; his eye watches the curling pyramids of smoke, as they gracefully ascend to his thatched roof; with every whiff he feels himself better, his thoughts are revelling in the fairy realms of imagination; when all his romantic ideas are suddenly dissipated by the boisterous chorus of his dogs, announcing the arrival of a neighbour, or traveller, and the necessity of providing for his wants in the shape of, vulgar damper and tea'. Bushing It - Camped for the Night
EDITORS COMMENTS
(1850) is an evocative and enigmatic photographic print depicting the daily life of British settlers in Australia during the 19th century. The scene captures a moment of respite after a long day of hunting and farming, as the settlers gather around a campfire to rest and prepare their evening meal. The image is filled with the rustic charm of rural life in the Australian outback. The settlers, dressed in typical attire, sit around a large campfire, their eyes fixed on the curling pyramids of smoke rising from the fire. The air is filled with the scent of woodsmoke and the sound of boisterous dogs announcing the arrival of neighbors or travelers. The settler in the foreground, with outstretched legs, tends to the fire, his 'little black pipe' in hand, taking in the warmth and comfort of the campfire. His thoughts are lost in the 'fairy realms of imagination,' only to be interrupted by the practicalities of camping life. The large billycan sits on the fire, filled with water for making damper, a simple type of bread, and tea. Horses and livestock graze nearby, adding to the pastoral scene. This print, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a glimpse into the daily life of early Australian settlers. It captures the sense of adventure, hardship, and camaraderie that defined the settler experience in this new and unfamiliar land. The image is a testament to the enduring appeal of the Australian bush and the simple pleasures of camping under the stars.
