Calypso Watches Telemachus with Cupid on His Knee, While Mentor Watches in Anger

EDITORS COMMENTS
is an exquisite pen and ink drawing by the Italian artist Bartolomeo Pinelli, created in 1808. This work of art is based on Book 7 of Homer's "Odyssey," which recounts the story of Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, and his encounter with the nymph Calypso on the island of Ogygia. In this masterful drawing, Calypso is depicted as a beautiful, voluptuous goddess, seated on a rocky outcrop with her back to the sea. She tenderly watches over Telemachus as he sits on the sand, a mischievous Cupid perched on his knee. The young boy looks up at Calypso with a curious expression, seemingly unaware of the amorous presence beside him. Mentor, Telemachus' wise and trusted advisor, stands behind the pair, his face contorted with anger and concern. He clenches his fists, his eyes narrowed in disapproval as he takes in the scene before him. The contrasting emotions of Calypso's gentle affection and Mentor's stern disapproval create a compelling narrative, inviting the viewer to ponder the complexities of love, desire, and the role of the elder mentor in guiding the young. Pinelli's masterful use of pen and ink, with brown and gray wash over traces of black chalk on ivory laid paper laid down on board, brings the figures to life with remarkable detail and depth. The drawing's rich heritage, as a part of the 19th century's artistic exploration of Greek mythology, adds to its significance and allure. This work of art is now housed in the Art Institute of Chicago, where it continues to inspire and intrigue visitors from around the world.
