The Cambridge Election - the Nomination, 1845 - A Glimpse into Political Turmoil
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a pivotal moment in British history - the nomination for the 1845 Cambridge election. The scene is filled with an air of anticipation and tension as constituents gather to exercise their democratic right and choose their new member of parliament. In the center of the image stands the Mayor, making an official declaration amidst a sea of banners and flags fluttering in black and white. Mr. Kelly, a prominent figure in this political drama, has been declared duly elected by his supporters while facing vehement opposition from his detractors who respond with groans and hisses. As Mr. Fitzroy Kelly takes to the stage, he addresses the electors passionately, undeterred by both cheers from friends and jeers from opponents. He emphasizes that despite now being part of Her Majesty's Government, his principles remain unchanged since he first sought their suffrages as a private individual. The crowd surrounding him represents diverse voices - men and women alike are present to witness this historic event unfold before them. This engraving from "Illustrated London News" offers us a glimpse into nineteenth-century politics where landowners like Sir Fitzroy Edward Kelly played significant roles in shaping Britain's future. Through this powerful visual narrative captured by an unknown creator, we are transported back in time to witness firsthand how elections were conducted during this era. It serves as a reminder of our ancestors' struggles for democracy while highlighting how political events continue to shape societies even today.
