The Camp, at Slobodzie, 1854. Creator: Unknown
The Camp, at Slobodzie, 1854. Crimean War, soldiers camped near the River Danube. The camp...assumes every day a more permanent and military appearance. It has lost much of its first picturesqueness in consequence...The soldiers having at first but few tents, rigged out all sorts of substitutes. Sticks were planted in the ground and made to support either willow boughs cut in the neighbouring island, or old Turkish carpet of various patterns and devices...many were so slight that they merely covered the head and chest of the soldiers, leaving the rest of their body exposed. So long as the fine weather lasted, however, these temporary tents were sufficient to keep off dews and the sun; but we have had three or four remarkable thunderstorms within the last few days, which made the position of ill-sheltered men extremely unpleasant'. EDITORS COMMENTS
The Camp at Slobodzie, 1854: A Military Encampment during the Crimean War This evocative photograph, taken from an 1854 issue of the Illustrated London News, captures the scene of a British military camp nestled by the banks of the River Danube in Romania. The soldiers, huddled together around a campfire, assume a temporary yet determined stance, their faces etched with the weariness of long campaigning. The camp, which once boasted a picturesque charm, now takes on a more permanent and military appearance. The soldiers, who initially made do with makeshift shelters, have since upgraded to more substantial tents. Yet, remnants of their earlier improvisations remain, as evidenced by the Persian carpets and Turkish fezzes scattered about. The scene is set against the backdrop of a rustic, outdoor environment. Soldiers cook over open fires, their pots and pipkins reflecting the flickering light. Some men sit idly by, gesturing towards the fire or each other, while others engage in quiet conversation. The camp's location, near the Romanian town of Giurgiu, was not without its challenges. The soldiers endured heavy rainstorms, which left them exposed and uncomfortable in their makeshift tents. Despite these hardships, the men maintained a sense of camaraderie and resilience, as they braved the elements and continued their service during the Crimean War. This photograph, a poignant reminder of a bygone era, offers a glimpse into the daily life of soldiers during a pivotal moment in history. The camp at Slobodzie stands as a testament to their perseverance and adaptability, as they faced the challenges of war and the unpredictable elements of nature.
