Five Capitals in the Villa Mattei in Rome, c.1809-c.1812. Originally, these two drawings were the lower halves of the two sheets on the right with a panoramic view of the Baths of Caracalla. The view continues in the drawing on the far right. To indicate that the sheets belonged together, Knip marked them with a capital Q. Who cut two of the three drawings in half and why he did so remains unclear

EDITORS COMMENTS
Five Capitals in the Villa Mattei in Rome, created by Dutch artist Josephus Augustus Knip around 1809-1812, offers a captivating glimpse into the ancient Roman architectural heritage. Originally, these five drawings were the lower halves of two sheets, with a panoramic view of the Baths of Caracalla continuing on the drawing on the far right. To indicate their connection, Knip marked them with the capital letter Q. The intricately detailed graphite and mineral drawings depict five ancient Roman capitals, each unique in their design and ornamentation. The columns, adorned with intricate carvings and friezes, exude an air of grandeur and historical significance. The muted colors and subtle shading bring the ancient stones to life, transporting viewers to the heart of ancient Rome. The Villa Mattei, located in Italy, has been a source of inspiration for artists and scholars for centuries. Knip's meticulous drawings are a testament to the enduring allure of Roman architecture and the rich cultural heritage it represents. The drawings were once part of a larger panoramic view, but it is unclear why two of the three sheets were cut in half. These precious drawings are now housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where they continue to captivate and inspire visitors from around the world. The intricate details and subtle colors of Knip's work invite close examination and offer a glimpse into the artistic and historical significance of ancient Rome.
