Captain Morgans defeat of the Spanish fleet, 1660s (c1880). Born in Wales, Henry Morgan (1635-1688) was a notorious pirate and buccaneer who, with the tacit support of the English government, harried and plundered Spains Caribbean colonies. In the Anglo-Dutch War of 1665-1667 he did the same to the Dutch. Morgan captured Panama in 1671, but after a peace agreement was signed with Spain, he was arrested and sent to London. His fortunes changed again in 1674, when he was knighted by Charles II, who sent him abroad again as deputy governor of Jamaica. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the dramatic moment of Captain Morgan's defeat of the Spanish fleet in the 1660s. Born in Wales, Henry Morgan was a notorious pirate and buccaneer who wreaked havoc on Spain's Caribbean colonies with the tacit support of the English government. Not content with plundering only Spain, he also targeted Dutch ships during the Anglo-Dutch War. In 1671, Morgan achieved his greatest triumph by capturing Panama. However, after a peace agreement was signed with Spain, his fortunes took a turn for the worse. He was arrested and sent to London. But fate smiled upon him once again in 1674 when Charles II knighted him and appointed him as deputy governor of Jamaica. The print showcases an intense naval battle scene featuring majestic sailing ships engaged in fierce combat on rough waters. It serves as a reminder of Morgan's audacity and skill as he fought against formidable adversaries to secure his place in history. This historical artifact from Cassells History of the United States transports us back to a time when piracy ruled the seas, empires clashed over territories, and individuals like Captain Henry Morgan became legends. The intricate engraving brings this epic tale to life while highlighting both its geographical significance - particularly within the West Indies - and its impact on global warfare during that tumultuous seventeenth century period.
