Capture of the Argentine Squadron, off Monte Video - from a sketch by a correspondent
Capture of the Argentine Squadron, off Monte Video - from a sketch by a correspondent, 1845. French and British ships attacking the Argentinian fleet off the coast of Montevideo: HMS Mclampus; Argentine Brig; HMS Satellite; Argentine Schooner; HMS Eagle; Argentine Schooner; HMS Comus; Argentine Admiral; Desaix, French Brig; Argentine Corvette. They got under way about 3 o clock, P.M. and were immediately followed by the Desaix, French brig; and H.M.S. Comus and Satellite. The Comus fired a shot ahead of the Argentine Admirals brig; and the Satellite fired several into the corvette. As soon as the Comus fired again, and the Satellite was fast coming, the Admiral struck his flag, and the corvette followed his example: several shots hit the two vessels, but no material damage was done. The two schooners and the other brig then struck their colours, which ended the affair. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Capture of the Argentine Squadron, off Monte Video" depicts a dramatic scene from 1845 when French and British ships launched an attack on the Argentinian fleet near Montevideo. The composition showcases the intense naval engagement with precision and detail. In the foreground, we see HMS Mclampus leading the charge, followed closely by Argentine Brig and HMS Satellite. As tensions escalate, HMS Comus fires a shot ahead of the Argentine Admiral's brig while Satellite unleashes several rounds into the corvette. The enemy vessels sustain some hits but manage to avoid significant damage. As Comus readies for another strike and Satellite closes in rapidly, surrender becomes inevitable for the Argentinian Admiral. He promptly strikes his flag, signaling defeat, which is soon mirrored by the corvette. The remaining two schooners and brig also submit to their conquerors' might by lowering their colors. This historical moment captured through a sketch by an anonymous correspondent was published in "Illustrated London News" in 1845. It serves as a testament to both French-British cooperation during this military operation and their dominance over the Argentinian squadron. The print not only immortalizes this pivotal event but also highlights its significance within naval history. It stands as a reminder of past conflicts that shaped international relations while showcasing remarkable artistic skill in capturing such dynamic action at sea.
