Carved ivory mirror back, c1310-1320, (1881). Creator: D Jones
Carved ivory mirror back, c1310-1320, (1881). Etching of a mirror case made in Paris in the early 14th century. The Gothic design incorporates four crawling monsters or lions carved around the outer edge. The God of Love sits enthroned with crossed legs, holding a falcon, and an arrow which he points towards the heart of a kneeling young man. A lady, the subject of the young mans ardour, kneels at the right. Both the lovers raise their hands as if in prayer. More pairs of lovers fill the surrounding space. Such objects were given as gifts, and featured almost exclusively secular subjects. From " The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum). [Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, London, 1881]

Created by D Jones in 1881, this etching depicts an exquisite mirror case made in Paris during the Gothic period. The intricate design features four crawling monsters or lions intricately carved around the outer edge, adding a touch of mystique and enchantment. At the center of this masterpiece sits the God of Love, enthroned with crossed legs and holding a falcon and arrow pointed towards the heart of a kneeling young man. A lady, who is clearly the object of his affection, kneels beside him on the right side. Both lovers raise their hands as if in prayer, symbolizing their devotion to one another. Surrounding them are more pairs of lovers filling every inch of space with their passionate presence. This remarkable artifact was often given as gifts during that time period and predominantly featured secular subjects like love and romance. The print originates from "The South Kensington Museum" which was later renamed Victoria & Albert Museum in London. It is part of a collection showcasing various works of art held within its walls. D Jones' meticulous engraving captures not only the beauty but also the essence of medieval craftsmanship and religious symbolism prevalent during that era.
